My best TV shows of 2017

  • Verso

I do seem to watch a lot of television. Like most nowadays I’m not a watcher of shows when they first air. The TV Times isn’t needed in our house. Downloads and catch up TV is the way we consume our fix of shows. I think the only shows I watched in 2017 to broadcast times were Doctor Who and Broadchurch – Oh and the Sheridan special on ITV.

Most series are saved until they’re over and are binge watched with 7 or 8 episodes a time being viewed. An average UK drama serial with 6 hourly episodes (48 mins if on ITV) can be watched in one sitting. This helps with Kato who is always forgetting what has happened and I spend the first 10 mins recapping for her!

As I say most of the stuff we watch is binged but there is a couple of shows we try and watch as they air. Kato’s are:- Grey’s Anatomy and Bull whilst I regularly watch the Chicago duo of Fire and PD (couldn’t get into Med) and Blindspot. I also religiously watch Neighbours as I have since it’s British debut in 1986

American comedies The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family are jointly watched along with Criminal Minds, This is Us (would have made my best of 2017 but first aired late 2016), Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder. This review is about NEW shows that aired in 2017 rather than continuing dramas/comedies.

There was some quality TV in 2017 along with some utter rubbish. Who ever commissioned the 2nd series of Doctor Foster needs to hang his/her head in shame.  A personal highlight was getting threatened on Twitter from the bloke who brought Lip Synch Battle to the UK – He didn’t like me describing it as mind numbing shit!

Here’s my TOP 10 of new shows with a few that just missed out.

Bubbling Under

Dynasty – A modern day remake of the 1980’s supersoap. It’s as camp as the original, just as OTT with ridiculous acting and storylines – I love it!
Mind the Age Gap – With reality TV taking over the schedules and classic originals like Big Brother becoming launch pads for the fame hungry wannabees this show was a refreshing reboot of the original psychological test premise. A houseful of pensioners and 20’s somethings. The apparent generational differences made compulsive viewing.
The Good Fight – Spun off from The Good Wife this show focuses on Diane Lockhart

10) Ozark

Starring Jason Bateman as a financial planner who has to relocate from Chicago to Ozark after a money laundering scheme goes wrong.  It’s been unfairly compared to “Breaking Bad”. I Say unfairly because Breaking Bad was overated shite! – Ozark fun fact:- The Felixstowe Securicor robber, Fast Eddie, was arrested in Ozark.

09) Moorside

Anything that stars Sheridan Smith is always going to be near a top 10 list and this is no exception. Based on the real life story of Karen Matthews who staged the abduction of her own daughter to try and claim the £50,000 reward money.

08) Snowfall

Narcos meets Boogie Nights in this drama set in 1983 Los Angeles. The show follows 19 year old Franklin Saint as he moves into the murky world of drug dealing.

07) Absentia

A missing presumed dead FBI returns after 6 years. Her husband has remarried and she finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation. The hunter has become the hunted.

06) 13 Reasons Why

An angsty teen drama. A student commits suicide and leaves her reasons why recorded onto s series of cassettes. Her class mates take it in turns to listen to the tapes to see how they feature in her demise.

05) Little Boy Blue

Another British drama based on real life events. This time the focus is on the 2007 murder of 11 year old Everton fan, Rhys Jones. This 4 part drama depicts the murder, the hunt for the killers and the trial.

04) Three Girls

The 3rd British real crime drama to make the list and without doubt the most controversial. Based on the Rochdale Grooming Gang crimes that first started in 2008. Whilst the subject matter is harrowing the acting was first class.

03) Mindhunter

Based on the book of the same name by the famous FBI profiler, John E Douglas. In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters.

02) Somewhere Between

Laura Price is a superstar news producer in San Francisco and fiercely loving mum. She isn’t crazy: Laura knows her 8-year-old daughter is going to be murdered. She doesn’t know who the murderer is, or why she’s killed, but she knows exactly when it will happen, where, and how. Despite this, all of her attempts to keep her daughter safe fail, and Serena’s fixed, unmovable, terrifying fate keeps her directly in the path of her killer. Whilst I loved this series the American audience didn’t which has resulted in cancellation after just the one series.

01) The Keepers

This documentary series tackles the unsolved murder of Cathy Cesnik, a beloved nun and Catholic high school teacher in Baltimore. After disappearing on Nov. 7, 1969, Cesnik’s body was found nearly two months later — but to this day, the killer remains unnamed. In the ’90s, the case returned to the spotlight after one of Cesnik’s former students accused the high school’s chaplain of sexual abuse, and claims that she was taken to Cesnik’s then undiscovered corpse and threatened. Director Ryan White pieces together the story through conversations with friends, relatives, journalists, government officials and Baltimore citizens, hoping to uncover the truth.
